Classic Scones Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cut into small pieces
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup raisins or currants (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Add the cold butter to the dry ingredients and use a pastry cutter or your fingers to cut it into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Stir in the milk, vanilla extract, and raisins or currants (if using) until just combined.
  5. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and gently knead it a few times until it comes together.
  6. Pat the dough into a 1-inch thick round and use a round cutter to cut out scones.
  7. Place the scones on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
  8. Allow the scones to cool on a wire rack before serving. Enjoy with clotted cream and jam!
